Square holding your money: next steps
By Ian Murphy · Last reviewed October 26, 2026
Square may hold funds or deactivate an account after a risk review, and holds can last for weeks or months depending on the situation. Here's how to respond through the official process.
1. Find out exactly why
Read every email and dashboard notice from Square. Write down the stated reason, any dates and any documents requested.
2. Answer through official channels
Reply only through Square's own dashboard or support. Send exactly what's requested: ID, invoices, proof of delivery or customer messages. Keep copies and a dated log.
3. Ask the right questions
Politely ask for the specific reason, the expected release date and what would resolve it. Stay calm and factual; it creates a paper trail.
4. Keep getting paid
Plan cash flow for the hold period and consider a backup way to take payments, set up honestly and with accurate information.
5. Know the outside routes
If official channels stall, you can file a complaint with the CFPB, your state attorney general or the BBB. For large amounts, talk to a licensed attorney.
